Signals on railway tracks

by Konrad Chudyba

.

A signalbox is a building which is the powerhouse of a block. It contains levers which operate the signals and points of a block. The Signalman is the one, which controls said levers. A typical signalbox has a map of the block, a block instrument, bells, windows on almost all sides of the building and a book that shows the rules and regulations of a Signalman, which the Signalman can check to remember the regulations. A Signalman needs to communicate with other Signalmans in order to keep trains in order. The communication traditionally takes place in bell codes. Signalmans have a unique way of communication, and thats commnuicating with bells. A Signalman in signalbox A on block A asks about clearence in block B for a train. The signalman in Signalbox B then either tells whether or not block B is clear. When it is. Signalman A changes his signals into all clear. Then Signalman B asks Signalman C about clearence in block C, when Signalman C approves, Signalman B changes his signals into all clear. When a block is not clear however, then Signalman C simply does not answer to Signalman B. There are also block instruments which Signalman B has on both sides of his signalbox. One is for Signalman A and the other is for Signalman C. The instrument can show three different conditions for block B: Train on Line, Line Blocked or line clear. This allows Signalmans A and C to know about the current condition about block B.
